UK Fugitive Hunts Ghosts in US – A council worker from Birmingham, UK, has been sentenced to four years and eight months in jail for stealing £900K ($970,000) from the local government over a three-year period between 2010 and 2013.
Tyler Evans, 42, was an employee at Birmingham City Council and worked as a customer engagement officer in the highways department. He began long-term sick leave in 2013 before being dismissed from the council in 2014.
An investigation found that he had submitted 35 false forms to his managers, resulting in 35 payments being authorized and paid into 10 separate bank accounts, under his own name and his business account called Paranormal Activities, as well as those of friends and associates.
After the fraud was uncovered, Evans fled the UK and moved to Pennsylvania, where he found work as a guide for ghost tours and formed a long-term relationship. Despite knowing he would eventually be caught, he was able to lead a normal life in the US for several years before being extradited back to the UK in December 2020.
In court, it was revealed that Evans had a serious gambling addiction and had lost 80% of the stolen money on gambling. He also had a personal loss, a woman he viewed as a mother figure who worked at the council had died from cancer, which contributed to his unhappiness in his job and led him to take advantage of the situation.
Sentencing Evans, Judge Richard Bond said “By removing yourself from the jurisdiction you were able, over many years, to lead a normal life and have a loving relationship with a partner in the US.”
It is truly a bizarre twist of fate that a council worker who committed such a heinous crime ended up in the paranormal events industry, chasing ghosts instead of facing the consequences of his actions. This case serves as a reminder that no matter how far one runs, eventually they will have to face the consequences of their actions. The UK born former-fugitive now hunts ghosts in jail.
